For the days when the words won’t come
An other news...
Hey Creatives,
It’s been a little while since I popped into your inbox, so a quick re‑introduction.
I’m Heather, and as a reminder; this newsletter is for creative writers who want practical tips, honest encouragement, and a reminder that you’re not doing this alone. My goal is to help you keep showing up to the writing work, even on the messy, reistance days.
A simple tip for your writing this week
If you only do one thing for your writing this week, make it this:
Lower the bar for what “counts” as writing.
Most writers often unconsciously run this rule in the background:
> “If it’s not a big chunk of polished work, it doesn’t count.”
That rule kills more projects than “lack of time” ever will.
Instead, try this for the next 7 days:
- 5–10 minutes of freewriting - e.g. if your resisting writing wite down the dialgue you are having with yourself.
- One paragraph of a scene
- A single page in your notebook - e.g. start a journalling exercise/prompt
- A messy brainstorm of ideas with no pressure to use them
Done = counts. Messy = allowed. Short = valid.
You’re training the habit of showing up. The quality deepens from there.
A story
A quick story to bring this home.
Recently, a writer in our community told me, “I must not be a real writer. I sit down and everything I write is terrible.”
If you resonate with this, here’s a few tips on what you can do:
- Give yourself “permission” to write badly on purpose for one week
- Make this your only goal: fill one page a day, no editing, no rereading
- Schedule your sacred writing time to do this - a time that works for you when you are least likely to be disturbed and are in great state to write.
The lesson:
You don’t earn the title “writer” by producing brilliant work every time.
You earn it by being the kind of person who is consitent and returns to the task, regardless of how it feels.
If you’re in a rough patch with your writing, nothing is wrong with you.
We all have days where we stumble. The key is to keep going anyway, even if it's for the time you've scheduled.
A Bit of Inspiration For You:
So if you’ve been avoiding your project because it feels “not good enough” then the first thing is just to release the resistance and begin (this doesn't even have to be about writing - note to self 😒 ):
- Choose the smallest possible next step
- Set a timer for 10 minutes
- Tell yourself: “This is not the final version, this might just be the beginning. This is me keeping the promise to myself.”
That’s it. That’s the work for this week.
You are still a writer, even on the days you don’t believe it.
What’s happening in the community
Here’s a quick peek at what’s going on inside our creative writing community:
📝 Recent wins: Writers completed the last 5 Day writing Challenge (Mythology Reimagined) with some truly exceptional writing. The next Challenge begins on Monday 6th July in the Facebook group.
- 📚 Current focus/theme: This month is Summercamp
month and the topic voted for this year (poll in the Facebook group) is "Writing the opening pages/getting started". I'm working on a sign-up page over the weekend and should have it available for Tuesday 7th July with all of the details.
- 🎥 Upcoming live session: Tuesday 14th July - Q&A and intro to the Summercamp
- 🤝 How to join in: Saturday is time for the #weekendwritingprompt in the Facebook Group. Join ina an post your interpretation in the thread in the group.
If you’re feeling stuck, reading what other writers are doing can be a powerful nudge. You don’t have to do it alone. And remember to share the love with comments and feedback.
